From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Unlicensed homebuilf floatplane. Aircraft hit a tree onshore on a go around from water landing. Report power loss. (-23) on may 5, 1998, Mr. Robert g. koenig was giving dual flight instruction in an unregistered an uncertificated floatplane, on the shrewsbury river in Oceanport, NJ. Mr. Robert g. koenig was operating a two place unregistered and uncertificated floatplane. During this flight, Mr. Koenig, was giving flight instruction to Mr. Charles r. larson jr. while exercising a go-around, the aircraft struck a tree in Mr. Koenig neighbor's back yard at 44 shore road, Oceanport, NJ and crashed. Our investigation found that Mr. Robert g. koenig was operating under exception #4274 which would have permitted Mr. Koenig to operate as a two place ultralight. However Mr. Koenig had failed to comply with the provisions set forth in exception #4274. Condition number two of this exemption states: each ultralight operated under this exemption must permanently display the following placard: "to be used for instruction only." This placard must have letters at least one-half inch in height and be displayed in a location easily visible and legible to all pers ons entering the ultralight vehicle. Mr. Koenig aircraft did not display this placard. Mr. Koenig is required to comply with all the condition, limitation, requirements and responsibilities listed in the FAA exemption number #4274, and by not doing so invalidates the FAA exemption number #4274. This makes Mr. Koenig vehicle an unregistered, uncertificated floatplane.

As the FAA filed it
