From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Rough engine at cruise. Turned back for mcg but landed on road. Connecting rod cap came loosed. (.4) the pilot was flying the airplane to a repair station for an inspection of the engine. He had noticed metal particulate matter in the engine oil during the last oil change, and felt the engine needed a mechanical inspection. While climbing to cruise, the engine shuddered, and lost all power. The pilot said he was unable to return to his departure airport, and made a forced landing on a dirt road. The airplane struck trees along the road, and received substantial damage. The airplane is in a remote location, and has not been recovered, or inspected by the NTSB. (-23) aircraft departed Mcgrath at cruise altitude of 9000 ft. engine began running rough and started vibrating. Pilot turned back to Mcgrath. Engine quit. Aircraft landed on a road one mile east of airport, damaging left wing leading edge, wing tip and right hand landing gear.
