From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

The pilot: Mr. Thomas r. powell, iii, stated that on August 16, 1998, at approximately 6:00P.m. PDT, Piper aircraft, N5908P, experineced a landing gear problem. After leaving the runway at columbia CA, he felt the wheels contact the runway after initial takeodd. After departing the traffic pattern he tried to retract the landing gear but it only moved part way up. He then tried to place the gear all the way down, but the gear did not move and blew a circuit breaker. After resetting the breaker he tried again to lower the gear with the same result. At this time he disconnected the landing gear transmission and tried to move the gear manually without success. He then reconnected the landing gear transimission and with a lot of pressure on the manual extension handle and the help of the electric motor the landing gear lever was forced into the fully extended position, but the indicator light did not come on. Mr. Powell then proceeded to San Jose reid-hillview airport, informed the tower of his situation and asked to do a fly by for them to verify the landing gear positions. He was told the right main was only partially extended. He then elected to land at San Jose International where emergency equipment was available. Mr. Powell landed and had only minor damage to the right flap and wingtip. In addition, there were no injuries. Inspection, revealed that the right main landing gear tube assembly that carries the cable from the electric gear motor had seperated from the housing assembly. No pilot deviation involved and no 8020-11 was generated. A copy of this report was furnished to the sjc FSDO operations unit. This concludes this investigation, therefore, this report is closed.
