From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On 08-22-98, at about 8:45 a.m., aircraft departed roosterville (MO10) enroute to Cameron, MO for a sightseeing/photography trip. While over the town of Cameron the pilot noticed that the oil pressure gauge was indicating zero. Aircraft was immediately turned towards Cameron (ezz) and into a long left base for runway 17. At this time a loud "bang" was heard followed by severe engine vibration. Pilot stated that he realized the aircraft was not going to make the runway at ezz and decided a corn field would make a better emergency landing area than the other option, which was a bean field. Aircraft landed in the corn field, one quarter mile north of ezz, with no injury to pilot or passenger and minor aircraft damage. Aircraft engine was disassembled to the extent necessary to determine that the engine falure was due to engine oil starvation. There were no external holes in the engine case and no signs of oil loss indicated on the aircraft. The cause of oil starvation can not be determined at this time. Incident #CE981GA0114 is closed.
