From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

On November 25,1998, Mr. Michael barton from Santa Barbara Municipal Airport (sba) ATCT, informed van nuys FSDO that pilot Mr. Fred george poppe, flying N4637M, landed at sba at 2135Z at 2135Z. He landed with landing gears down on runway 15L. It appeared that the aircraft was attempting to turn left to exit runway 15L when the landing gears collapsed. They got the gears down and moved the aircraft to maintenance repair station. I spoke with the pilot, and he stated that after landing normal with all gears down on runway 15L, he attempted to turn left to exit runway 15L when the landing gears collapsed. On December 15,1998, I visited sba and spoke with the pilot. He gave me a written statement about this incident. In the written statement he said that he landed normal on runway 15L. He attempted to turn left to exit runway 15L. He may have inadvertently hit the gear switch instead of the flaps. The nose dropped, the propeller struck the ground, and the right wing tip scraped the runway. There was no injury to the pilot, the sole occupant of the aircraft. The aircraft was lifted and the landing gears came down. The aircraft was removed from runway 15L to stratman aero service, an faacertified repair station. On visual inspection I found the propeller three blade tips were bent backwards. The nose gear doors, right main landing gear inboard door, fuselage forward skin and engine lower cowls appeared to be damaged. The engine crankshaft runout had not been checked, but externally there was no apparent damage. The aircraft maintenance log books appeared to be in order. The aircraft was ferried to woodland aviation, inc. (800-442-1333_ for repair.
