From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-5)On may 30, 1999, at approximately 1835 EST, david habig, pasel certificate number 305643862, made a touch and go landing on runway 15 at Indianapolis metro airport, Indianapolis, IN in N5435J, a Cessna 172. There were three passengers on board with the pilot in command. During the climbout when the aircraft had reached an altitude of about 200 feet above ground level, the engine suddenly lost a significate amt. Of power. The pilot was able to maintain adequate airspeed during the subsequent descent to make a 270 degree turn and land in a field east of and adjacent to the active runway. There was only minor damage to the aircraft and no injuries to the pilot or his passengers. The engine was able to provide enough power for the pilot to taxi across the runway and to the ramp. Upon investigation it was discovered that the exhaust valve push rod had broken and the intake valve rod was bent. No further action in this matter is anticicpated and this inci dent is closed.
