From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-5)American airlines flight # 181, a Boeing B-757-223 aircraft, N639AA, departed logan intl airport (bos) on July 10, 1999, enroute to los angeles intl airport (lax). While at cruise, the flight crew observed the right engine oil quantity drop to zero followed by a rising oil temperature and oil pressure dropping to zero. As a result of this observation, the flight crew immediately shut down the right engine when the oil pressure was at 30 PSI and monitored the engine for a 15 minute windmill. The flight crew diverted to Kansas City intl airport (mci) and landed without further incident. American airlines despatched a field trip of mechanics from American airlines repair station in Texas to mci on July 11, 1999. American airlines mechanics discovered that the right engine air turbine starter had a seized failure most probably caused by a sheered shaft start valve failure in flight that subsequently caused the engine gear box to fail. The right engine gear box and accessories were replaced. This incident number CE99IAC0072 is closed.
