From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Acft veered off the rwy on landing, struck the VASI, and the landing gear collapsed. (-23) on August 22, 1999, at 1320 EDT, an experimental amateur built, richard e. hartzell, Acrosport, N38RH, lost directional control upon landing at Lorain County Regional Airport (22G/LPR), Elyria, OH, and collided with runway lights and a VASI light, at the conclusion of a pleasure flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time. No flight plan had been filed. The aircraft sustained minor damage. The approximately certificated pilot, the only occupant, received no injuries. The flight originated from griffing-sandusky airport on August 22, 1999, at approx 1300 EDT. Subsequent investigation found the left main landing gear lower bungee cord attachment post broken, allowing the cord to become disconnected, causing the left wing to settle lower than normal. The pilot felt he was compensating for this with opposite (right) aileron and rudder control, causing him to drift off to the right side of the runway, striking 3 runway lights and finally coming to rest again a VASI light.

As the FAA filed it
