From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) N521HP, Cessna T206H, being operated by the California highway patrol, was dispatched from auburn muni (aun) for surveillance mission. At 4,500 ft. MSL the pilot reported a strange "thump" followed by an unusual vibration. An emergency descent was established to Sacramento Mather field (mhr). The engine stopped developing power and as the pilot flared for landing, the propeller stopped rotating. Post landing inspection showed the propeller couldn't be rotated more than a few degrees. Further inspection showed much metal in the valve area of the number 5 cylinder. The exhaust valve was also missing. The engine was tagged by this office and sent to r.e. naylor at ANE-mido-44 for a FAA observed tear down and inspection by the manufacturer. The results of that inspection and the suspected cause of the failure are detailed in r.e. naylor's report dated 11/23/2001. A copy of this report has been made a part of the office file for this incident.
