From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The acft tookoff with approx 14 gals of fuel (estimated 8 gals on the LH and 6 gals on the RH wing tanks). After flying for approx 25 min, the pilot (peter t. walters), noticed uneven fuel quantity gauges indications (LH wing tank fuel selector was off and the pilot was not aware of it. Acft do not have a crossfeed fuel selector syst) and decided to return to mettetal-canton (1D2) arpt immediately. At approx 5 1/2 miles north of the arpt the eng quit from fuel starvation from the RH wing fuel tank. An emergency landing was done with an approx 90 degree heading to the grass infield of the horse racing track (Northville downs) in Northville, MI. Acft hit a wall and sustained substantial damage to the eng compartment, front of the fuselage and the cockpit. Also the LH wing and flap/aileron have some damage. There was no fuel leak (only eng coolant). Inspection of the fuel tanks shows no useable fuel on the RH wing and approx 8 gals on the LH one. (.19) on August 18, 2001, at 1115 eastern daylight time, an experimental avid bandit, N62PT, sustained substantial damage during a forced landing. The 14 CFR part 91 personal flight had departed the mettetal-canton airport (1 D2), plymouth, Michigan, at 1030 on a local flight. The airplane was in cruise flight returning to 1D2 when it experienced a loss of power and a forced landing was made to a racetrack located about 5 miles from the airport. The airplane hit a concrete building during landing roll. The pilot and the passenger received serious injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed.
