From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The pilot, clifford mosher and his "safety pilot" qulton arnold hues (CFI #011304537) departed Norwood municipal airport at approximately 16:55 to practice instrument approaches at new bedford regional airport (ewb). Before departing Norwood airport Mr. Mosher noticed that the painted areas on the taxiway and runway are slippery due to the icy conditions. His takeoff from Norwood was normal and without incident. On their return to Norwood airport, Mr. Mosher rememered the icy conditions prior to their departure. The following is a synopsis of their landing at Norwood airport at approximately 18:15 on January 9, 2002. Mr. Mosher was executing a straight in for runway 35 localizer approach. Mr. Mosher stated that he "touched down about 1/3 of the way down the runway, but he was reluctant to utilize the brakes because of the patchy thin ice that they had encountered prior to take-off." Mr. Mosher stated that he "finaly began to apply braking about 1,000 feet from the runway end, but he says that the brakes were ineffective." The aircraft proceeded off the departure end of runway 35, and came to rest on its prop, about 90-100 feet beyond the hard surface, in a shallow ditch. It should be noted that this model Beechcraft bonanza only has one set of controls. The one control yoke can be placed in the left position or right position during flight. There are no brakes on the right side, only on the left side. Two Cessna citation jets lande within one hour of the accident. Both reported the braking action as "good." Winds were variable 270 4-6 mph, temperature +2 degrees celsius. At the time of the accident, the NOTAM field condition (which had been filed at 15:35) noted: "patchy thin ice on runway 35. Braking by vehicle, was stated as good. The airport manager reported "patchy thin ice on the runway's painted marking." Upon arrival at 19:30 I observed no skid marks either on the pavement or in the wet sod at end of runway. I confirmed braking as "good" at 19:30 while riding with the airport manager on runway 35. Arriving at the aircraft I noticed that the flaps were not extended. The pilot later stated he "did not have time to extend the flaps." He stated that sometimes he uses them and sometimes he does not." A line person (eyewitness) stated the "the aircraft touched down approximately 1/2 way down runway 35. Damage consists of a bent propeller, and lower engine cowl damage. The safety pilot, oulton arnold hues (CFI) had a slight contusion (forehead) and was treated and released by Norwood emergency medical personnal. privacy data omitted

THE AIRCRAFT PROCEEDED OFF THE DEPARTURE END OF RUNWAY 35, AND CAME TO REST ON ITS PROP, ABOUT 90-100 FEET BEYOND THE HARD SURFACE, IN A SHALLOW DITCH. BOTH REPORTED THE BRAKING ACTION AS "GOOD." UPON ARRIVAL AT 19:30 I OBSERVED NO SKID MARKS EITHER ON THE PAVEMENT OR IN THE WET SOD AT END OF RUNWAY. I CONFIRMED BRAKING AS "GOOD" AT 19:30 WHILE RIDING WITH THE AIRPORT MANAGER ON RUNWAY 35. ARRIVING AT THE AIRCRAFT I NOTICED THAT THE FLAPS WERE NOT EXTENDED. THE PILOT LATER STATED HE "DID NOT HAVE TIME TO EXTEND THE FLAPS."
