What happened

(-23) Aircraft was in normal cruise flight at FL210 in VMC when pilot windshield suddenly cracked. Entire windshield was covered with numerous fracture lines across outer pane to edges. There were two primary vertical fracture lines about two inches apart near center of windshield, parallel to each other and to sides of windshield, that ran to top and bottom edges. Other numerous primary fractures appeared to propagate horizontally from the outboard sides of the two primary vertical fractures and continued to the outboard edges. There were numerous small secondary fractures forking off from each primary fracture for short distances. However, the windshield was not crazed or entirely filled with fractures and was still visually transparent, with clear regions as large as one to two square inches. The operator had no reason as to cause of failure, and said the windshield had not been replaced since they took possession of the aircraft. (-23) AIRCRAFT WAS IN NORMAL CRUISE FLIGHT AT FL210 IN VMC WHEN PILOT WINDSHIELD SUDDENLY CRACKED. ENTIRE WINDSHIELD WAS COVERED WITH NUMEROUS FRACTURE LINES ACROSS OUTER PANE TO EDGES. THERE WERE TWO PRIMARY VERTICAL FRACTURE LINES ABOUT TWO INCHES APART NEAR CENTER OF WINDSHIELD, PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER AND TO SIDES OF WINDSHIELD, THAT RAN TO TOP AND BOTTOM EDGES. OTHER NUMEROUS PRIMARY FRACTURES APPEARED TO PROPAGATE HORIZONTALLY FROM THE OUTBOARD SIDES OF THE TWO PRIMARY VERTICAL FRACTURES AND CONTINUED TO THE OUTBOARD EDGES. THERE WERE NUMEROUS SMALL SECONDARY FRACTURES FORKING OFF FROM EACH PRIMARY FRACTURE FOR SHORT DISTANCES. HOWEVER, THE WINDSHIELD WAS NOT CRAZED OR ENTIRELY FILLED WITH FRACTURES AND WAS STILL VISUALLY TRANSPARENT, WITH CLEAR REGIONS AS LARGE AS ONE TO TWO SQUARE INCHES. THE OPERATOR HAD NO REASON AS TO CAUSE OF FAILURE, AND SAID THE WINDSHIELD HAD NOT BEEN REPLACED SINCE THEY TOOK POSSESSION OF THE AIRCRAFT.
