From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Extra 300, N125EX, and navion b, N5335K, were preparing to land at Lakeland linder regional airport, Lakeland, Florida, along with numerous other aircraft, for the purpose of attending the sun 'n fun fly-in. N125EX performed the "lake parker arrival", wherein air traffic controllers, at the time preceding the accident, were directing all aircraft to follow a sequence of landmarks leading to the north side of Lakeland airport, and then a left downwind for runway nine left. A working copy of air traffic control transmissions for "Lakeland north local" indicates that, at the time preceding the accident, all aircraft were cleared to land on runway nine left. N5335K performed the "warbird south arrival", wherein air traffic controllers, at the time preceding the accident, were directing all aircraft to follow a sequence of landmarks leading to the south side of Lakeland airport, and then a right downwind for runway nine right. A working copy of air traffic control transmissions for "Lakeland south local" indicates that, at the time preceding the accident, all aircraft were cleared to land on runway nine right. N5335K entered the right downwind for runway nine right, and subsequently landed on runway nine right as instructed by air traffic control. N125EX entered the left downwind, and was supposed to land on runway nine left, but on final, lined up for runway nine right, contrary to air traffic control instructions. The pilot statement of N125EX indicates that he was actually preparing to land on runway nine right, and was following other airplanes, to specifically include navion, N5335K, to the runway. Although, according to his statement, the pilot of N125EX had actually seen N5335K in front of him during the approach to the runway, he subsequently landed on top of navion N5335K after such aircraft had touched down and was in the roll-out phase of the landing. The pilot of N125EX, and the pilot and passenger of N5335K were not injured. Both aircraft sustained substantial damage. privacy data omitted
