From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) American trans air, flight 208, enroute from guadalajara, Mexico to chicago, Illinois, (midway), encountered turbulence while detouring around thunderstorm activity. Passenger injuries were incurred and the flight diverted to stl. The landing was normal and the injured passengers were sent to area hospitals, (depaul and barnes). All were checked and released except two that remained with somewhat serious head lacerations. Admission time at depaul hospital was 6 pm, 4-18-02, and release time was 2:00 pm, 4-24-02, for one, and 7:30 pm, 4-25-02, for the other. A rescue aircraft (B737) was sent to take passengers to the original destination, chicago (midway). The B757 was ferried to an ata maintenance base also at chicago (midway). Investigation subsequently revealed that the captain maintained appropriate horizontal and vertical distances from thunderstorms, in accordance with American trans air's operations manual.
