(-23) The following is a synopsis of the turbulence incident that occurred on may 1, 2002 of ual flight 862. The information was compiled from the statements received from the flight crew. These statements are available for review at the FAA united airlines san francisco certificate management office (sfo-cmo). Ual flight 862, a B747-400, was a schedule flight from Sidney, australia to san francisco, CA on may 1, 2002. Approximately 2.5 hours from, and 1000 miles northeast of, Sidney, australia, the flight experienced severe turbulence, which resulted in injury to two (2) flight attendants and five (5) passengers. The aircraft diverted to auckland, new zealand and made an uneventful landing. Soon after completing the meal service, and while picking up the rest of the refuse, the captain turned on the seatbelt signs. As the flight attendants were making their way through the cabin to ensure all the passengers had buckled their seatbelts, the captain made an announcement for the flight attendants to take their seats and fasten their seatbelts. Almost immediately, the aircraft encountered the first of what was to be several minutes of severe turbulence. Once clear of the turbulence, the flight attendants began the task of accessing and treating the injured. The captain announced they were diverting to auckland, new zealand where the aircraft landed uneventfully. In conclusion, each statement by the crew indicates that the sequence of events from the captain turning on the seat belt sign, instructing the flight attendants to take their seats, and the first occurrence of turbulence, all happened in a very short time. One crewmember indicated that the total time was probably only 10-15 seconds. Each statement indicates that there was very little time to prepare everyone for what was to follow.
