From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(.19) On may 5, 2002, at 1440 eastern daylight time, a yoder GP-4, N59JY, was destroyed on impact with terrain following an uncontrolled descent approximately 15 miles east of mount pleasant, Michigan. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The 14 CFR part 91 flight was not operating on a flight plan. Both private pilots were fatally injured. (-23) home built experimental aircraft witnesses reported engine sounded like it lost power (quiet with intermittent bursts of noise) moving west bound low over trees. Aircraft impacted ground about 1/4 mile to west along road. Wreckage indicates aircraft was in spin when it hit ground. Both occupants received fatal injuries.
