From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) 05/27/2002, Mr. Hill (pilot/owner) flying from hyannis, ma to salisbury, MD. While enroute with IFR flight plan at 6000 feet reported a thump under the engine cowling and a minor vibration, with auto pilot on. Shortly thereafter a loud bang occurred and a more pronounced vibration was noted. Pilot contacted New York ATC and declared an emergency and diverted to jfk intl airport, New York. Pilot was cleared to land and landed without incident with emergency crew available. Upon inspection of aircraft after landing it was noted that the prop spinner had separated from the spinner attaching back plate, fasteners were found to be in place with the exclusion of one segment of two fasteners found missing on the spinner back plate which was torn off, no evident damage was noted to the aircraft. Burning smell noted by pilot may have been from twisted attaching plate making contact with engine fiberglass cowl fairing aft of prop. Mr. Hill indicated that prop was overhauled on or about 03/2002, by hh prop, burlington, NC, and installed by atlantic aero, greenboro, NC, a certificated repair station. Greensboro, FSDO and atlantic aero asst pmi contacted and in contact with CFR for records and info. Mr. Hill advises that prop total time since overhaul is approx 10 hours. Maintenance investigation to be completed by greensboro FSDO. Occurrence has been upgraded to an incident and will be documented on incidentprivacy data omitted in FSDO ea 15 office log. FAA form 8020-23 has been completed and forwarded to indicate offices privacy data omitted
