From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On June 7, 2002 N4967E, Piper PA38-112, with an instructor and student aboard, landed hard on runway 18 at Henderson executive airport, Henderson, NV. The crew were attempting their third touch-and-go landing when the aircraft bounced after making contact with the runway approximately 1000 feet south of the threshold. According to the instructor, she did not take the controls but called for the student to apply full power and retract the flaps. The aircraft left the runway to the east side, collided with the dirt apron, and came to rest approximately 1400 feet south of the threshold. The aircraft sustained extensive damage to the left wing, bending the center and aft spar where the left main gear is mounted. The left wing leading edge was separated from the fuselage. The nose gear collapsed due to the hard landing and the propeller broke off at the propeller flange. The right wing tip had been scraped on the bottom. The rear tie-down was torn from the fuselage. The only injury was a cut on the student's left knee.
