What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) After initial takeoff, aircraft starting losing power, approximately 3.4 mile from airfield. Pilot turned back towards the field at 1100 feet with the engine now down to 2000 RPM. Aircraft landed short of the paved runway in the gravel section. The aircraft landed in a slip causing the right lower wing to dig into the ground. The landing gear collapsed after the sideloads were applied to the gear. The airplane then flipped over onto its back, crushing the full flying rudder. Damage to the airframe was to the landing gear, spoked wheels, rudder, right lower wing, fuselage lower right longeron (where the landing gear attaches to the longeron tube), and the left top wing outer tip bow.
