From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On 07/01/02, at 17:26Z, N28857, an AA-5B on final for runway 20 at hfd. One quarter mile out on an upwind approach the pilot saw an aircraft approaching his aircraft head on. Tower told pilot that the aircraft was a helicopter (UH-60) and it was not a factor; it was tracking taxiway a for a landing at national guard facility. Taxiway a is 300 feet from centerline of runway at intersection of taxiway h and a. crosswinds for landing were 10 to 15 knots from the AA-5B'S right. Approximately 1100 feet down the runway, 45 seconds to 1 minute, after UH-60 passed on right the aircraft bancked vilently 45 degrees to the left and wing tip the ground causing minor damage. The pilot applied power and came back around and landed without incident. Two witnesses, both rated pilots, stated the violent bank of the aircraft is not consistent with a normal 10 to 15-knot crosswind.
