From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The flight was a training flight which upon landing the aircraft engine quit. The CFI attempted a restart. The pilot stated, "while attempting a"hot start" the engine backfired, I continued to crank the engine, and at the time I noticed smoke coming from the cowling and assumed we had a fire. We exited the aircraft and ramp personnel extinguished the fire." Investigation concluded that the CFI and his student pilot utilized improper hot start procedures. The pilot was counseled by the assistant chief instructor in the hot start procedures per the pilot's operating handbook (POH). This matter is considered closed.
