From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(.19) On July 12, 2002, about 1332 eastern daylight time, an American general AA-5, N6024L, registered to a private individual, operating as a title 14 CFR part 91 personal flight, crashed during an emergency descent in the vicinity of boca raton, Florida. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The aircraft received minor damage, and the private-rated pilot and a private pilot-rated passenger were fatally injured. The flight departed palm beach county glades airport, pahokee, Florida, at about 1300. According to an FAA inspector, the pilot declared an emergency on the FAA fort lauderdale's executive airport air traffic control tower's radio frequency. The pilot stated, "we're at 400 feet, descending at 400 feet per minute at 80 miles per hour". He did not give the nature of the emergency. FAA radar data showed the aircraft was last observed about 15 NM northwest of the fort lauderdale executive airport. The wreckage was located in about 5 feet of water, inverted, within the boundaries of the loxahatchee national wildlife refuge, palm beach county.
