What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(.19) On July 23, 2002, at approximately 1500 mountain daylight time, a Let blanik L-13 glider, N48038, was destroyed when it impacted a dirt berm during an off airport landing near at cedar valley airpark (private), Lehi, Utah. The private pilot and his passenger were not injured. Two private individuals owned the glider, and were operating it under title 14 CFR part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal local flight which originated approximately 1 hour before the accident. The pilot had not filed a flight plan. The pilot said that when he turned base to final for a landing, the glider got into "abnormally high sink rate for runway 17." He said that he landed 200 feet short of the runway and impacted a 3 foot high berm next to an irrigation ditch. The glider's keel beam and wing spar was broken. (-23) pilot misjudged winds on final approach to runway and encountered a down draft he was not able to fly through to the runway. He landed short and hit a 3 foot berm to an irrigation ditch at approximately 50 KTS. The glider was catapulted over the ditch and landed hard crushing the landing gear and breaking the wing spars and keel.
