From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Mr. Young stated he departed the lawrence county airpark, (htw) at 17:20 EST enroute to his home field Robert Newlon (I41). Mr. Young stated he climbed to a VFR altitude of 2000 MSL for the eight (8) statute mile enroute portions of the flight. Mr. Young said he was maintaining 2000 MSL, and estimating his position as 1.5 miles nw of the airport, on a quartering left base for runway 02 when he turned off the engine. Mr. Young stated he thought he had sufficient altitude to glide to the airfield and wanted to practice a "dead stick" landing. Mr. Young stated when he realized he would be unable to clear the trees on the approach end of the runway, he restarted the engine. Mr. Young stated when he restarted the engine the aircraft pitched nose down and struck the trees and subsequently the ground before he could initiate a recovery.
