From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot operated above overcast and became trapped on top. He found himself in the clouds and the aircraft airframe iced up. He soon lost control and went into a spiral toward the ground. When he broke out, he found himself over a lake. He regained control and tried to fly the aircraft around the area of the lake. The aircraft was loaded with ice and was on the verge of a stall at full power. He landed the aircraft along the shoreline of the lake in about 12 feet of snow. The left main mount was torn away from the aircraft and it flipped over onto the top as it dug through the snow. Pilot suffered head injuries and facial cuts.
