From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On June 11, 2003, 1945 CST, a chinook plus ii ultralight vehicle, s/n CP202141 (A13-SWB) departed from a small grass strip located in Elsanor, Alabama. Shortly after take off, the ultralight crashed into the top of pine trees separating the aircraft right wing on impact with continued flight into terrain. This caused fatalities to both non-certificated pilots operating the vehicle. A witness stated that the aircraft circled the field before doing a tight circle and appeared to have shut down the engine and trying to restart the engine. The weather conditions were clear, there was no post-crash fire. Post control surface continuity check revealed the flight controls were functioning correctly with no restrictions. Aircraft instruments were in satisfactory condition. The aircraft engine rotated freely and compression was present, the ignition system checked okay, gas looked clean, and carburetor had fuel. Aircraft did not have an exemption to operate as a two place ultralight vehicle. Ultralight vehicle was not declared an aircraft until investigation revealed no exemption for vehicle. NTSB preliminary report was received on 10/21/2003, see attachment.
