From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On June 18th while on a local pleasure flight from mattoon, Illinois, coles county memorial airport (mto) to Atwood, Illinois, cooch landing area (IL31) the appropriately rated private pilot and only occupant of the aircraft, mistook a hard surfaced county road about 1.2 miles north west of the airport for the runway. At about the time the PIC recognized the fact that he was not landing at the airport he hit and broke a power line across the south end of the road. After touching down on the road the left wing struck a metal road sign causing the aircraft to veer to the left off the road into a ditch. As the aircraft hit the west side of the ditch bank it was launched back into the air and came to rest about 150 feet off the west side of the road in a corn field with corn about 2.5 feet high. Weather at the time was VFR with about 10-mile visibility and light winds about 5 to 6 mph. The pilot exited the aircraft without injury. The aircraft suffered substantial damage to the left wing, center section, left aileron, and propeller.
