From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On July 19, 2003, about 1500 pacific standard time, a Cessna 185F, cfhmy, registered to albert brust of edmonton, alberta, Canada attempted take-off from a Private grass strip (approximately 2000') on the north end of Sinclair Island, Washington. Approximately 100 meters into take-off roll the aircraft tail drifted approximately fifteen degrees to the left, the aircraft continued veering right until contacting and stopping at a barbed wire fence and six by six wood post. The barbed wire fence sliced through the right underwing causing a tear from front of the underwing straight back through the underwing and tearing the skin of the right aileron. The wood post caused substantial damage to the right stabilizer and right elevator, causing skin damage and damage to the aircraft structure within the left outboard stabilizer area. The aircraft owner, (alfred brust) was a passenger on the attempted take-off. In a telephone interview with the aircraft owner, Mr. Brust indicated he believed the pilot did not properly control the aircraft during take-off roll. Operated under part 91.
