From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On August 13, 2003, at approximately 17:10 PDT a Taylorcraft N50839 made a forced landing in a field just short of runway 31L at Reid-Hillview airport in San Jose, CA. The flight instructor stated that while on final approach, he noticed they were low on the visual glide slope. Since this was the students second flight lesson, he decided to help him with the approach and attempted to add power. The engine continued to idle regardless of throttle application. The flight instructor realized they would not make the runway and opted to land in a field prior to the runway. No damage to the aircraft occurred and there were no injuries to the flight instructor or student. The instructional flight was being operated under the provisions of 14 CFR part 91.
