From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) United airlines 604 landed at Washington Reagan airport at 1100L with the nose wheels missing. There were no injuries and the passengers were disembarked using stairs that were placed at the rear left door. The airplane stopped on the centerline of runway 01 approximately 4000FT from the approach end of runway 01. The runway is 6869 ft long. Upon landing the nose gear axel was ground off on the lower end. The airplane was on the main runway 01-19 for approximately six hours until it was towed off the runway. The nose of the 737 was lifted by airbags until a small dolly was placed under the remaining nose gear strut. The aircraft was then towed away by a wrecker truck. The both engines received FOD damage. The nose gear did not collapse on rollout and the runway was not damaged. After contacting united airlines, we were informed that neither the pilots or anyone at the company knew anything about the landing gear problem until the aircraft touched down at Washington Reagan airport. The pilots were not available for interview. Both pilots filed asap reports. After united flight 604 landed at dca, the nose landing gear wheels were later found at chicago o'hare airport.
