From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot stated that aircraft was on base to final for runway 35 at Ormond Beach muni airport at about 400' at approximately 1500 RPM. He heard a loud bang (back-fire) from engine and then engine would not respond to throttle. He elected to land in field just short of airport. After about a 250 to 275 yard ground roll on dry grass the airplane crossed a two lane road and struck a highway signal pole, damaging the leading edge of the left wing. About 1 yard out from the wing-strut the leading edge was pushed in over an area of about 2' with max indent of about 2" at a rib. The following items were noted on site: the aircraft engine had already been run by pilot (observed by police officer privacy data omitted authorized by FAA inspector privacy data omitted) when FAA inspector arrived; fuel could not be drained from left tank when inspector arrived 4 hrs after landing; tank selector on both when inspector arrived; fuel would drain right tank; left fuel gage indicated empty and the right indicated less than 1/4.
