From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot was taking off from runway 23 at Martin field, College Place, WA, as a flight of two amateur built van RV-8F aircraft, for flight to walla walla, WA. Pilot initiated a right turn immediately after take off (less than 100 feet from ground). Second plane was behind 300 feet and to the left of the lead aircraft. The pilot of the second aircraft noted that the lead aircraft rolled wings level and leveled off losing airspeed quickly. The lead aircraft then rolled into a left turn back towards the runway losing altitude quickly. The pilot of the second aircraft noted the lead aircraft hit the ground in a flat attitude to the right of runway 23, between the runway and whitman drive that parallels the runway. Aircraft skidded about 30 feet after impact. The impact was about 11 g's according to the meter in the aircraft. The pilot died at the hosp.
