From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On may 7, 2004, N29KB, branham van's RV-6, departed from provo, UT, enroute to parowan, UT. Before takeoff the pilot checked the fuel quantity via the fuel guages which indicated just over 1/2 in the right tank and just over 1/4 in the left tank. The aircraft holds 19 gallons in each tank (38 total) and the pilot estimated the aircraft had a total of 16 gallons of fuel, with a fuel burn of 10GPH. The estimated flight time from provo to parowan is 1.0 hours. The aircraft departed provo at 1130 MDT. During the flight the pilot used the fuel in the left tank until it was about empty then switched to the right tank. The flight continued until past beaver, UT, when the fuel indicator on the right tank went from 1/4 to just above empty quite quickly. The pilot was about 1/2 way between the beaver, UT airport and the Paroway, UT airport and elected to continue to parowan. Approximately 12 miles from parowan the engine sputtered and the pilot switched back to the left fuel tank. The engine ran for a few more seconds then quit. The aircraft landed in a field approximately 10 miles north of parowan airport at 1230 MDT. The aircraft sustained major damage during the landing.
