From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On or about may 24, 2004, Mr. John allen curran jr., FAA certified commercial pilot, certificate number #573956705, failed to perform a complete preflight inspection on Cessna CE-172-N, N734NG. Mr. Curran failed to ensure enough fuel was onboard for the intended flight. As a result a forced landing on I-580 just west of strobridge avenue, near the highway 238 interchange, about 8:25 a.m. about three miles north of the Hayward airport (hwd), steve tress California highway patrol officer reported. The aircraft is equipped with two fuel tanks, each of which holds 21.5 gallons total, 40 gallons of which are useable. The evidence shows that prior to departure Mr. Curran did not perform a visual inspection of the fuel tanks or top off the fuel tanks with fuel. As a result the aircraft performed a forced landing.
