From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) During a soaring competition out of W54, the pilot encountered unexpected clouds and weather moving in. Pilot decided to land at fdk which was closest airport. The winds became more severe and he encountered downdrafts and rain so he opted to land in a field. During landing approach at 15 mph the aircraft apparently experienced a sudden updraft, climbed about 20 feet and landed hard. Minor damage to aircraft and minor injury to pilot. Several other gliders were also forced down by weather during the competition.
