From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On landing rollout the right gear leg collapsed, breaking in the middle, damage was limited to wing tip scrapes, bent wing struts, bent gear leg, and localized fairings, bent propeller, there were no unusual attitude maneuver type marks in the gravel along the runway where this pilot landed the aircraft indicating the gear had a flaw and folded after the tail wheel had settled to the ground. The right tundra tire simply turned in about 15 degrees and skidded on the gravel. Several prop strikes were noted. One prop blade was bent back 15 degrees, both tips has paint removed from turning through the loose gravel. Note: this is a 25 year old aircraft. The owner has checked with Maule on this issue. Maule has improved the gear legs for its M-5 aircraft and the owner is installing updated heavier duty legs to prevent future occurrances of this type. Analysis of the gear leg shows minor corrosion inside the tube at the fault area and may have contributed to the failure. This aircraft has installed large stc'd tundra tires which may also have contributed by exerting higher forces on the gear leg than originally certificated for.

As the FAA filed it
