From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) During an instructional flight conducting stop and go landings the aircraft engine stopped. The student and the flight instructor tried to start the engine for approximately five minutes. While they were trying to start the engine a fire erupted from the engine cowling. Mechanics rushed to the aircraft and extinguished the blaze. Pilot stated he did not believe he flooded the aircraft engine. The FACETMA4 carburetor, part number 10-5217, serial number DC46020 was disassembled. A fracture of the float running in conjunction with the seam of the solder joint was noted. The fuel bowl itself contained fuel and the float had sank to the bottom of the bowl itself. Airworthiness directives were reviewed and no outstanding ad's were noted. AD 93-19-04 had been completed and kelly aerospace power systems had overhauled this carburetor on 6/13/03 due to a previous fire. Carburetor was overhauled at tach 6072.72, 281 hours had elapsed since last fire.
