From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

(-23) This is a preliminary report. All the facts are not known yet at this point in time. An amended report will be issued once all relevant facts are known. (-23 amendment) on August 10, 2004, at 16:05 MDT, Mooney M20J, N6212Q, piloted by david lee feller, holder of FAA airman certificate 522443689 was on final approach to runway 01 at the Durango, Colorado -Animas Air Park Airport (00C). Visual meteorological conditions (VMC) prevailed at the time. The pilot stated that as the flight approached the Durango area, the la plata airport AWOS reported the winds from the north at 9 knots so he chose to land on runway 01 at Animas and made a normal entry to the traffic pattern. When the aircraft was an estimated 300 feet from the runway, the aircraft encountered a substantial downdraft of air and began to descend rapidly. The pilot applied full throttle in response, the stall warning was annunciating and the aircraft struck the south side of a service road located near the approach end of the runway, veered across the runway's approach end and came to rest off the east edge of runway 01. The right main landing gear and r ight wing flap were broken off in an aft direction, the fuselage was bent and wrinkled behind the baggage compartment and the propeller blades showed torsional bending and chordwise scratches. Flight control continuity was confirmed. The aircraft's engine and other systems indicated no anomalies. The aviation routine weather report, METAR, for Durango-la plata county airport (dro), which is 7 NM southeast of Animas park airport reported the following meteorological information: winds 340 degrees at 10 knots sky cover: clear visibility: 10 sm temperature/dew point: 82F/35F altimeter: 30.27" hg remarks: peak winds 330 @ 32K at 1602, thunderstorms and lightning in the northeast, south and southwest quadrants of dro this is a final report for the FAA.
