From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Pilot departing mccollum field about 1345 EST enroute to boone, NC, with wife aboard in N137Y, a Grumman lynx, AA1C. At approximately 1545 EST, pilot called three times to boone UNICOM 122.8 for advisories and traffic. No response. Pilot announced intentions to over fly field. Pilot over flew boone airfield (3120 MSL) at low altitude. Pilot witnessed dead windsock, good pavement, at least 50 ft. trees obstacle on runway 13, and low fence on runway 31. Pilot circled field and announced downwind, base and final on runway 31. Pilot slowed plane to about 70 knots and full flaps. Pilot used slip technique to lose more than 1500 ft. altitude. Crossed fence about 70 KTS. Pilot stated that he landed plane close to touchdown zone. Pilot stated that he applied brakes rapidly, which loaded pressure to front strut torsion bar. Torsion bar responded by springing plane back into air. Pilot judged that salvaging landing was safer than attempting to climb and clear 50 ft. obstacle in 4100 density altitude. Local residents contacted police and fire departments. When the state patrol did not respond, fire department contacted NTSB and handed their cell phone to pilot. Pilot gave verbal report of incident to powell, NTSB. Under pilot's understanding of NTSB 830.5, notification to NTSB was not required. Powell gave pilot permission to move aircraft. Pilot taxied plane to tie-down. Later that day pilot received call from don gardner, supervisor FAA/SO-33, for another verbal report of the incident. (-23 amendment) on 11-4-2004, john zimmerlee was the PIC of N137Y, a GA-AA1C. During landing on rwy 33 at NC14 (boone airport), N137Y ran off end of the runway and hit trees. Both wings damaged.
