From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) October 30 at approximately 1710L N57388 departed Summerville Airport on runway 24 on a FAR part 91 flight. After takeoff on climb out witnesses stated that the aircraft lost power at about 500 then the aircraft made a steep left back and attempted to return back to runway 06. The plane went out of sight behind a tree line and impacted the ground in a retention pond just off the end of runway 06. The aircraft appeared to have hit left wing first, then right main landing gear and came to stop on slope of the retention. Fuel drained out of the right tank on the occupants. The amount remaining in the tank was approximately three gallons. The left tank had approximately 13 gallons in the tank. The gascolator was broken off upon impact. The carburetor was broken off at the neck of the carburetor. There was only five drops in the line going to the carburetor and approximately two ounces of fuel in the bowl of the carburetor.
