From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The pilot privacy data omitted ^ stated he had been under the hood for two (2) hours practicing instrument approaches to craig, Hayden and steamboat airports. After he had been airborne for about an hour he switched tanks. He recorded tach time, which is the pilot's privacy data omitted method of monitoring fuel consumption. During his subsequent panel scan, the pilot privacy data omitted ^ implied that he concentrated his focus on his newly installed GPS 400 instrument to a distraction. During a maneuvering turn the engine quit. He attempted a restart without success, so he decided to put the aircraft down with the gear up in a snow field to minimize the damage. The next day he checked the tanks and found one tank was virtually empty. After some calculations on the tach times he realized he had forgotten to switch tanks. When beagles aircraft personnel took the wings off to transport it they confirmed apparent fuel depletion.

As the FAA filed it

(-23) THE PILOT ^PRIVACY ^ STATED HE HAD BEEN UNDER THE HOOD FOR TWO (2) HOURS PRACTICING INSTRUMENT APPROACHES TO CRAIG, HAYDEN AND STEAMBOAT AIRPORTS. AFTER HE HAD BEEN AIRBORNE FOR ABOUT AN HOUR HE SWITCHED TANKS. HE RECORDED TACH TIME, WHICH IS THE PILOT'S ^PRIVACY DA^ METHOD OF MONITORING FUEL CONSUMPTION. DURING HIS SUBSEQUENT PANEL SCAN, THE PILOT ^PRIVACY ^ IMPLIED THAT HE CONCENTRATED HIS FOCUS ON HIS NEWLY INSTALLED GPS 400 INSTRUMENT TO A DISTRACTION.
