From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) This incident occurred on a Private paved runway (oriented 270DEG magnetic) approximately 3000' in length located approximately 10 miles nw of Reedly, CA. The Private pilot was flying the PA-22 for the first time and reported that he touched down after overflying the first half of the runway. During roll out, the brakes were inoperative/ineffective and he initiated a left turn as he reached the end of the runway. The aircraft overturned and came to rest in a near vertical position supported by its nose and right wing leading edge. There were no injuries to the pilot or passenger and only minor damage to the propeller, nose gear, and right leading edge of the wing. The pilot had previous experience in a PA-22 tri pacer equipped with landing flaps but no experience in the subject aircraft which had no flaps. This inexperience may have contributed to excessive approach speed and a long landing. Post incident inspection of the aircraft revealed the brakes wre spongy/ineffective.
