From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The pilot reported that during takeoff the tail wheel assembly failed. During the subsequent landing, the aircraft's directional control was nonexistent and the aircraft ran off the runway. As the aircraft ran off the runway, it struck a taxiway sign on the underside of the right wing, damaging the landing gear and wing structure. No fire ensued and there were no injuries. An inspection of the tail wheel assembly indicated metal fatigue. The failed tail wheel assembly remained attached to the aircraft by guiding chains and during the flight returning the aircraft for landing the flailing tail wheel assembly damaged both horizontal stabilizers and elevators.

As the FAA filed it
