From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On 8/17/05, at 1910 local time, a PA-28-140, N9848W, serial number 28-23360, owned and operated by the pilot privacy data omitted attempted a take off from Great Valley, NY grass runway 22. Approximately two thirds down the runway a severe vibration was felt and the aircraft pulled hard to the left, and departed the runway into a bean field. The aircraft came to rest upright with minor damage to the nose wheel, propeller, cowling, engine mount, spinner and both wing tips. The pilot sustained a minor cut on the forehead, was treated on the scene and refused hospital attention. Weather was VMC and was not a factor. Investigation found the four nuts that hold the nose wheel fork to the strut housing were missing and the bolts pulled out of the fork. The nose wheel fork and wheel were separated from the aircraft. Also, the pilot was a student pilot since 1979 and while having a current medical, the medical was not endorsed. Follow up to be by FSDO operations personnel. This incident is considered closed.
