From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On 9/24/2005 at approximately 1330 EDT, the pilot privacy data omitted took off from perl acres airport (46NJ) in the subject aircraft with privacy data omitted as a passenger. The pilot privacy data omitted occupied the front seat of the tandam seat aircraft. At approximately 1400 EDT, the aircraft was observed travelling over the airport in an easterly direction at approximately 1000 feet. For no apparent reason, the aircraft then entered a tight clockwise (as viewed from below) spiral and impacted the trees to the northeast of the airport. Both occupants were fatally injured in the crash. The aircraft, while substantially damaged, was complete at the crash site and did not suffer an in-flight breakup. The engine was running and developing power at the time of impact as evidenced by all three propeller blades being broken. The aircraft was equipped with a ballistic recovery parachute, however the safety pin had not been removed prior to flight and was still installed at the crash site. The PIC failed to maintain control of the aircraft. The PIC failed to arm the ballistic recovery parachute. The PIC disregarded all FAA regulations regarding pilot and aircraft certification. As the PIC was unlicensed, no pilot records were available for review.

As the FAA filed it

(-23) ON 9/24/2005 AT APPROXIMATELY 1330 EDT, THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ TOOK OFF FROM PERL ACRES AIRPORT (46NJ) IN THE SUBJECT AIRCRAFT WITH ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ AS A PASSENGER. THE PILOT ^PRIVACY D^ OCCUPIED THE FRONT SEAT OF THE TANDAM SEAT AIRCRAFT.
