From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) After experiencing total hydraulic failure, the DC-6 crew was unable to maintain directional control and slid off the left side of runway 8 at the Ralph Wien Memorial Airport in Kotzebue, AK. The auxiliary hydraulic system also failed, leaving the crew with limited braking (emergency air brake only) and no steering capabilities. The crew used reverse thrust to slow the aircraft down and asymmetrical thrust in an attempt to keep the aircraft on the runway. Air brakes were also deployed, but without success. A right crosswind, as well as patchy snow and ice on the runway, and restricted visibility due to the use of reverse thrust, contributed to their inability to maintain directional control of the aircraft. The aircraft exited the runway about 1500 feet from the end of the runway and slid down a shallow embankment, onto a frozen lagoon. The aircraft was not damaged and the crew sustained no injuries. privacy data omitted

As the FAA filed it

^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^
