From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) The pilot left jefferson county airport (bjc) and landed at Erie airpark (48V) and picked up a passenger. The aircraft departed Erie airpark for maneuvers around 0900. It departed Erie airpark with an unknown person on board (maybe the brother of the deceased passenger). It returned to Erie airpark and picked up the other passenger (now deceased). They proceeded to panama lake and made a low pass about 500 feet across the lake, then a sharp pullup like a hammerhead maneuver, turned to the right and almost did not pull it back up. On the second pass - this time about 100 feet - they tried the same stunt but this time it stalled and made a right turn in a nose dive. The aircraft hit the edge of the lake, which was frozen over. Both pilot and passenger were killed.
