From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) After takeoff the pilot reported to the aircraft in tow that he was losing engine power. At this point, the pilot of the tow aircraft released the glider. The pilot of the tow aircraft attempted to restore power to the engine by pumping the throttle and then decided to switch the magnetos from both to left and right. As the pilot was switching the magnetos from both to left and right, the engine backfired through the carburetor and stopped running. The aircraft made an emergency landing in a farm field. After landing a small fire occurred, was extinguished by the pilot and personnel on the ground. The aircraft sustained minor damage.
