What happened
The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.
(-23) Pilot's statement: pursuant to our visit at chd this morning, the following is what happened from my perspective: I was in a 2-ship take-off from kchd on Saturday, may 5, 2006. The purpose of the intended flight was to have breakfast at nearby williams gateway (kiwa). The stearman leading our flight departed normally from runway 04L. After he had lifted off, I began my take-off roll. I heard, and felt, a sharp "pop" which resulted in the aircraft pulling left. Full right rudder and full right brake would not correct the left turn. The aircraft stopped at taxiway foxtrot still on the runway albeit the right wing tip was in the dirt at the edge of the hard surface. I exited the cockpit and saw where the right wheel had folded at the point it is attached to the axle. I saw what caused the loud pop and loss of directional control. One of the cross cables for the landing gear had failed. Very light damage resulted with most of the damage having resulted from pulling the aircraft clear of the runway. Weather and runway conditions were not a factor.
