From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) Based on the operators statements when interviewed two days after the accident, he was cleared for takeoff from oak and routed over the san francisco bay to cross the san mateo bridge at mid span at or below 1400 MSL enroute to pao. ATC had just terminated radar services and directed the pilot to contact pao tower about the time the aircraft reached 1300 MSL. The pilot was changing transponder code to 1200 and looking for or attempting to change the comm radio to the pao tower frequency when the aircraft impacted the surface of the bay in about three to four feet of water. The aircraft settled on the bottom of the bay and the pilot after several minutes got out and stood in the bay until the coast guard retrieved him from the water. The pilot said he does not recall any abnormal flight issues or performance issues with the flight. All aircraft systems and powerplant appeared normal until he found himself in the water.
